Memory Tapes Channel George Lucas With Cling Wrap

Berlin-based director Vera Todorova used a tiny budget, a lot of cling wrap and truckloads of ingenuity to recreate George Lucas’s debut feature film THX 1138 for a New Jersey-based creator of “psychedelic girl group songs“, musician Memory Tapes.

Trance Sisters is the latest track from Memory Tapes’s 2011 album ‘Player Piano’. This black and white clip opens with a woman dressed in Sailor Moon-esque office attire being escorted as a prisoner by a man in a black suit. There follows a series of camera pans which track and spin along futuristic industrial buildings, and our Sailor and her warden are shown in a lecture theater where a passionate orator is overwhelmed with ideas about evil mind control.

Our prisoner blacks out and wakes up bereft of hair and clad entirely in white. What is it about freakish cults, monochromatic uniforms and hair aversion? Well, it makes the ensuing scenes incredibly stunning for one. Bring in the cling wrap! This clip is worth a watch just to imagine how fun it would be to be in her position—mind control notwithstanding.

Todorova has done an outstanding job on a limited budget, making fantastic use of location to get the desired creepy future society vibe. For more black and white Memory Tapes brilliance see the clip for his song Yes I Know. Pan’s Labyrinth would be proud.
