We were already fans of London electronic duo Mount Kimbie after stumbling across their video for Would Know, and their latest does not disappoint. Carbonated features a tranquil beat that slowly evolves into a snappy night-time rhythm. Slight vocal samples are introduced in the song’s resolution, adding an eerie human element to the otherwise electronic soundscape.
Director Tyrone Lebon captures the mood of the song by translating quiet blips into a rainy city day. The aesthetic of the video is based around colorful lights being backdropped by muted landscapes. As the song tempo changes from disconnected ambience to a busy beat, the video plays along by changing from a dreary day to a crowded night, culminating in kisses and slow-motion movement. The final result is a beautifully calm narrative that maintains reliability thanks to the mundane “nine-to-five” aspect of the video.
Mount Kimbie have only been around since 2008, but their unique brand of quiet post-dubstep has earned them spots on top ten lists everywhere from Pitchfork to NME. Their continued collaboration with Tyrone Lebon is just the icing on the cake. As well as being responsible for the Would Know video, London based photographer/director Lebon has had his work commissioned for big names such as Nike and i-D magazine.
