One To Watch: Fences

From amongst Seattle’s rich musical history (think Nirvana and Pearl Jam) comes Christopher Mansfield, the man behind the band Fences.

A graduate of Berklee College of Music (whose alumni features such names as Rivers Cuomo and Howard Shore), if pushed against a wall, Mansfield’s sound can be described as a sort of janglier Tegan and Sara. Which is only fitting, seeing as his self-titled debut was co-produced by Sara Quin, one-half of the duo.

Having recently been awarded a spot as one of Spin Magazine’s 35 Must-Hear acts at the recent SXSW, Mansfield is quick to wave off notions of Fences being merely an alias. According to him, it is, instead, a culmination of everything he loves. With his gauzy vocals, and at times downright self-deprecating lyrics, it isn’t hard to become a fan of his brand of “wussy pop”. Currently on tour with Against Me!, Mansfield’s debut album was released at the end of 2010.
