Rat Vs Possum Go Back To School

As part of the city’s annual State of Design festival in July, Melbourne was blessed with a visit from fascinating young designer Lucy McRae. What brought her back to her home country was this video for local cult synth-pop group Rat Vs Possum, who are no strangers to adding elements of performance art to their shows and have been known to cover their venues in bubble wrap and themselves in glitter.

The video  for Fat Monk sees Rat Vs Possum vocalist Daphne Shum take us on her journey through two disparate worlds. Whimsical choreography reminiscent of synchronised swimming and high school science experiments are featured in a fun, theatrical, orchestrated puppet show. In the vein of the Rock Eisteddfod (only much, much cooler), McRae’s directorial debut proves can master anything.

The video for Fat Monk was shot during an intensive three week course, where students in RMIT University’s architecture, fashion, media and interior design schools had the opportunity to hone their skills alongside one of the masters of creative and innovative design. Rat Vs Possum were approached by McRae to participate in the project, allowing the budding designers to gain experience working with industry professionals and creating work for a client. Lucy is currently in discussion with institutions across the globe to replicate the concept of her ‘summer school’, which would encourage students around the world to experience a new direction in creative education.

Fat Monk is from ‘Let Music And Bodies Unite’, a dance-inspired party album featuring elements of ’90s dance music, post-rock, disco, electronica and unashamed pop music. The album is out now through Sensory Projects.
