It’s a classic formula: boy meets girl, boy likes girl, girl is with someone else, chaos ensues with a hurdling showdown. With the Arms Race-directed clip for Mikelah by Superhumanoids, this apparently classic formula beams with heart-swelling earnestness; there really is no option but to have your heart broken by Mikelah simultaneously with the curly-headed protagonist.
Juxtaposing the brightly lit parade of athletics that opens the clip is the haunting sequence that follows, showing our protagonist in a drunken and pill-induced frenzy, desperately training himself to hurdle over the bars and into Mikaelah’s heart. The hurdles motif that runs throughout the clip feels like the perfect metaphor for unrequited love: desperation, exhaustion, depletion. We sympathise and empathise, being prodded to recall our own romantic misadventures.
The song itself is gorgeous; the luscious, Morrissey-esque vocals of Cameron Parkins swells in all of the right parts and is complemented beautifully by the sweetly teasing harmonies from Sarah Chernoff. The tune is topped off with the thudding drums of a racing heartbeat from drummer Evan Weinerman and the mysterious and elusive synths from Max St. John.
This clip from Superhumanoids will have you swaying in time to the bitter-sweetness of a perfect heartbreak.
