We’ve heard people talking about “The Next Big Thing” time and time again, only to find ourselves repeatedly disappointed and slightly annoyed that we have, in fact, not witnessed the birth of a new sensation. But now, exploding from Melbourne’s musically inclined womb is Kristina Miltiadou, and yep, you guessed it, she’s The Next Big Thing. Selling out band rooms and dimly lit stages the city over, Miss Miltiadou has captured the hearts of a rock’n'roll generation with her infectious brand of girl-pop, and she’s got every toe along Australia’s East Coast tapping to her gently powerful beat. We talked to the rising star about her song ‘Carousel’, and her first foray into that most whimsical of musical expressions, the music video…
What’s the concept behind your video?
The concept was basically to do something fun and spur of the moment that encapsulated my vibe for those who didn’t know much about me (nature, joy, dancing, partying, movement, Greece—the pine forests which are all over Greece—creativity and live ability). Also, since we weren’t ready to release an official single I wanted to do something that was going to bring the song ‘Carousel’ some attention that wasn’t an official release. It’s sort of like a pre-single video teaser. My idea for the actual ‘Carousel’ film clip involves similar elements of nature and dancing but i think the idea of doing a spontaneous live jam made it interesting and exciting to watch.
Who are all your super cool dancers?
My super cool bros. All really good friends of mine. The thing that’s great about the video is that that’s what it was, it was a big friend jam, and that’s why I think they were all so excited to be involved. All we do in our spare time is break into song and dance around so the prospect of traveling out into a big hilly wilderness with a couple of slabs and some instruments made it a no-brainer for them, I think.
Where did you find such a beautiful location to shoot?
The location is my lovely family friend’s property out in Arthur’s Creek. They are from Northern Greece and make cheese for a living and they have basically created the closest thing to the Greek mountains in Australia on their property, which was perfect for me because the main reason for my obsession with hills and trees is the Greek mountains that I’ve walked through for hours on end. It’s something special and their property really captures that vibe.
When can we expect your next video? Album?
We have brainstormed the next live jam video but there’s still heaps to organize before we actually do it so it will probably be another few months. As for the album, I’m still working on it with my producer Franc Tetaz; it’s coming together really well but no exact release date yet, there will be a single out soon though…
How do you see the next year playing out for you and your band?
The next year will be dedicated to getting on radio, touring heavily, working towards a successful album release, meeting lots of lovely, talented and interesting people on the way and having a cranking good time together!
