Back in May, we introduced you to our latest music crush, Michigan-based Lord Huron. We got up close and personal with Benji Schneider, the man in charge, where we got to learn about the band’s beginnings—Schneider’s sister was the one who actually pushed him to release his songs, which are inspired by girls and nature, and were recorded by a lake. Seems obvious, seeing as how the songs themselves evoke ethereal, tranquil vibes. His training as a visual artist helps—each song begins with Schneider visualizing the melody, helping to create a literal soundscape.
Vampire Weekend aren’t the only ones who can take tropical tunes and make them accessible—Lord Huron’s island vibes are more laid-back and dreamy. Last year’s ‘Mighty’ EP, the second release from Lord Huron in 2010, was performed solely by Schneider, but it sounds much fuller. Opulent harmonies accompany Afro-beat percussion, which is paired with folky, indie-guitars.
The EP’s title track sounds like taking a walk through the woods only to end up beachside. The sunshine peeks through branches, just enough to make sure you’re going in the right direction without hurting your eyes. And when you finally reach your destination, the water quietly laps at the shore, creeping up around your toes and washing away the dirt from your walk.
LA-based freelance filmmaker Yuki Aizawa recently released a video for Mighty. With dreamy shots of treetops and oceans, the video perfectly narrates the track. Stock footage of animals butting heads emphasizes the song’s mantra—”I do not fear you.”
