He may not be the typical embodiment of a YouTube superstar, but over the past year we’ve seen Marcel the Shell With Shoes On become an internet sensation, with quote-ability to rival that of Ron Burgundy. The brainchild of Jenny Slate and Dean Fleischer-Camp, Marcel came to life in a short film that evolved into a web-series and a children’s book, and is now set to become a television series.
Chatting with NBC’s Brian Williams on Rock Center Monday night, Slate and Fleischer-Camp chat about Marcel and how the animation came about. After Slate’s contract with Saturday Night Live was not renewed for a second season, she set about trying to work creatively in new ways. Soon, she came up with the childlike voice that would become the basis for their character, a tiny shell with one eye and a pair of shoes.
Exciting things are in store for the adorable Marcel and his ‘parents’, and as always, we can’t wait for the third instalment of Marcel the Shell With Shoes On—perhaps next time he’ll have some stories to tell about his rise to internet stardom.
