Get Dazed With Africa’s New Music Stars

In this short film created by the guys over at Dazed Digital, Chris Saunders (director) and Rod Stanley (editor of Dazed & Confused magazine) travel to Lagos, Nigeria for the third annual MTV Africa Music Awards, ‘an event that had drawn performers from all over the continent, as well as a few international names such as Chuck D, Eve and Rick Ross‘.

The video includes the African performers they spoke to and partied with in Lagos, including Radio & Weasel (Uganda), Daddy Owen (Kenya), and Cabo Snoop (Angola). These musicians tell stories of their successes, but also stories of the challenges they’ve had to endure such as the lack of a royalty system, and the proliferation of music piracy—which has had continual detrimental effects on the development of their music industry. One of the great stories included in the film is by the first-lady of R&B, Sasha (Nigeria), who has become an accomplished artist, despite having to work 200% harder due to being a woman in her industry.
