Carolina Fontoura Alzaga wants to sell you some trash; well, not exactly. By creating painstakingly crafted chandeliers from recycled bicycle parts, the artist of online shop Facaro demands that we rethink the way we define function.
Rather than protesting in the streets, Alzaga conducts her activism from a tiny workshop on the outskirts of Los Angeles. She scours junk yards for cast off bicycles and uses their parts in what she calls the CONNECT series. By combining concepts of opulence and disposability, Alzaga hopes to “spark some dialogue” about our perception of power and beauty. In this Etsy Handmade portrait, the artist discusses the series’ political message and how she hopes to influence the evolution of humanity.
