In Stylelist‘s video “Behind the Clothes”, Hollywood’s favorite off-the-rails songstress-cum-fashion savant Courtney Love invites us inside her closet. The closet itself is the size of a studio apartment, and contains an array of high-end couture, vintage and antique clothes, some customized by Courtney herself to encapsulate the queen of grunge’s screw-you attitude.
Portable loves to keep tabs on Ms Love, first with the hilarious Courtney Love Gets Animated, and now with this journey inside her closet.
Her clothing is nothing but extraordinary. With cigarette flailing, Courtney pulls out her infinite assortment of gloves, an endless array of tulle and a shoe collection that rivals Carrie Bradshaw’s. Although she claims her shoe collection isn’t that large, the rows and rows of personalized purple pumps from Marc Jacobs, glittering 90s Prada platforms and coveted Christian Louboutins proves almost every other collection inferior.
The racks of vintage and antique clothing from her grungy days are kept next to high-end couture such as Oscar de la Renta, Versace and her personal favorite—Vivienne Westwood. “I’m really big on Westwood,” Courtney says, “even though my boobs have popped out twice now.”
Courtney has been influencing the fashion scene since the 90s, popularizing and coining the style “kinderwhore” where torn babydoll dresses are teamed with smeared red lipstick. Since then she has remained a fashion icon and the epitome of a hot mess, managing to look fashionable in almost anything she wears, in almost any state she is in.
Courtney herself accounts her incredible knowledge of fashion to being trained early, working in the wardrobe department at Paramount Studio’s in the 1980s. Named as the most controversial woman in the history of rock by Rolling Stone, her wardrobe maintains the same sense of subversive feminism and unconventionality, making fashion Courtney’s longest lasting addiction.
