In a fittingly bizarre and not-very-informative video to promote his new children’s book, Lemony Snicket serves ice cream to his fans, plays a piano and waits as the book’s illustrator Maira Kalman constructs a hat made of paper for him. He also assumes the identity of “Representative of Lemony Snicket”—just another alias we can add to Daniel Handler‘s list of pseudonyms.
The creative pair are together in the video (which comes to us from Red Bucket Films) to celebrate the release of 13 Words, the new book Snicket penned that features art by the inimitable Kalman, which weaves a story from 13 kid-friendly words like dog, hat, despondent and haberdashery.
If the book is anything like Snicket’s past work or his behavior in this video, it is sure to terrify and delight children and adults in equal measure. Flip through the book here and see more of Maira’s work in her new book, available here.

I have so much love for this man! He came to Australia in 2001 (or thereabouts) and my mum drove me 2 and a half hours to Readings so that he could sign my Series Of Unfortunate Events books. He was very kind and hilarious and still one of my very favourite writers, 10 years later.
