Italian artist Stefano Monfeli never intended for his work to be compiled into a book, until his little sister requested he do so to give her something to present at school. After winning the World’s Best Brother award, Monfeli (who works under the name Pane) showed People Think I’m Cool—a tome of his illustrations, paintings and commercial work—to an editor, which took the purposely-uncool pink book with the tongue-in-cheek title from his family collection to bookstores around the world.
In this video—from Tom Galesloot and Lorenzo Milelli for Precint Five—Monfeli discusses his work, the book and his new project. A series of glass-fronted boxes holding remnants of his past work were built by the artist—who is now based in Amsterdam—to become “portable galleries” and allow his work to be showcased and inspected outside of traditional gallery environments.
Tonight from 6pm to 9pm, Precinct Five is holding an event to celebrate Monfeli’s work for those lucky enough to be close by.
