Jason Schwartzman for The New Yorker iPad App

By Adrian Taylor / May 13th, 2011 in Tech / / 377 views

He might be a movie-star and indie icon, but at heart, Jason Schwartzman is just a normal guy. Like us, he enjoys his French manicures, levitating pool-side, spiking his coffee with whiskey, air-writing, elephant ring tones, and posing pants-less on sumptuous leather couches. Nothing weird.

He also enjoys the New Yorker’s new app for the iPad. We wrote about the app and this excellent promo video back in September, but are revisiting today to celebrates its release. Access to the iPad version of the publication will be free for current print subscribers, and available for $59.99 a year as an all-digital subscription. In addition to archive access (dating back to 1925), app subscribers will enjoy regularly-updated cartoons, articles and exclusive audio/video features.

The app has received stellar reviews thus far, but whether it will be among the last nails in the coffin of print media remains to be seen. With dozens of other print periodicals releasing in-app iPad subscriptions in the coming months, the future of magazines may have indeed arrived. And the future is very Jason Schwartzman-ish.
